Questions from Viewers!!!

Q: My question to you is, as you were studying art- what has helped you develop a library of images in your head- particularly with creature/monster designs and dragons? I have alot of difficulty drawing without reference now days, it's become a crutch, and I'm trying to prepare myself to learn how to be able to draw convincing and realistic designs through thought and inspiration alone. Usually, my specialty is in dragons and general fantasy, but I've regressed in my ability. Can you please give me some direction in how to study, as I've never had any help, and don't know how else I should progress at this stage?

A: What I usually do. Practice drawing a lot of animal feature from good photo ref or go to the zoo. There are some weird looking animal everywhere, deep sea fishes, squid, and all kind of insects. Also looking at movies, video games, illustration book and a bunch of concept design from any good production studio. All of them combine, plus constantly seeking inspiration from something new, edgy...from these sources. Don't limited yourself by just looking at the fantasy or typical dragon drawing or painting...expand.
-To make something convincingly realistic, you have to imitate realism itself. Drawing real animal and make them convincing...then you will know the direction you want to go when create fantasy creature. Also don't forget to practice drawing and painting people...they are also come in handy mixing matching with creatures.

Q: I would like to let you know the following
could you please make video tutorials to show with what kind of tool you draw with and how do you paint glowing things like fire and light sources and how i should set my layers in the different modes, and with what kind of tools do you use to sketch and draw.

A: Mostly Brushes, Dodge tool....that's pretty much it. You can also setting your brush to have different function by changing your brush MODE (on brush property menu bar). Also make your own custom brushes. Q: I have a question about drawing the figure (either male or female), what shapes do you generally use to construct each part of the body? For example, cube/cylinder for head, box for torso, cylinder/boxes for limbs, ect.

A: Look at the over all form and make up a big shape in your head. Then logically break it down into geometry shape, what is it compose of? Different people poses may result in different geometry composition. Go to life drawing session and practice...you will see what I mean. Nothing is really set in stone, whatever is easiest and fastest for you to start off with is best.

Thanks for all overwhelming e-mails guys!!! Due to the high volume of e-mails and questions, I apologized that I cannot usually reply to you within a day or two. I will try my best to answer them all personally and get all the questions answer either by Videos or Post.
