How to draw War Machine and Ironman

How to paint Ironman Warmachine from Ironman 2 speedpainting. Here is another video how to draw comics character series, but this one take a little twist, I'm approaching into sort of a cinematic painting practice or study. Saw Ironman 2 trailer a few weeks ago and was going to do it then. But I didn't get a chance to finish video until now. It was a great practice 30-40 mins speedpainting.

If you are looking for similar painting style tutorials you can take a look at Watchmen Silk Spectre speedpainting tutorial, Digital Painting Tutorial Video Court Lady, and the old How to draw and paint Ironman. You will enjoy the similar process or I hope. :)

Great Xia. I saw the trailer couple of weeks ago and that simply looks fantastic. I'll be looking forward to see it. The painting really came out well. I still remember when you posted the first ironman 1 speedpainting, which I recently painted like you! Time really flies :)

Best wishes and thanks.

Hi!
This is fantastic!!
I'm looking on all these paintings, and they are really useful for somebody like me that are learning how to digital painting, but i wonder what about brushes.

I have some trouble using opacity and flow. Ca nyou explain how do you use them?
I'm watching a lot of tutorial, but noone explain about how to use these settings :)

Luca said...

Trez> I can help you with that. You can start with low opacity like 30-50% just to rough out the idea. Then once you have clear what you want, you can make a new layer on top of it and use a higher opacity like 60-90%. If you watch more of the idrawgirls videos, he explaines how he uses opacity- just search more! ;) He normally doesn't play that much with the flow.

Hope you have a clearer idea of how to use opacity. Good luck.

Hello.
Are you a student of the Reilly method of drawing and painting? It seems to be.
Thank you.

Happy New Year dudes and dudettes!

XIA said...

Carlos> No, I am not. Don't really know who Reilly is, but I assume he must be good. I am more along the line of observing from the master artists like John Singer Sargent, Ander Zorn and the great Craig Mullins...and I also learn by observing contemporary digital painter masters like Sparth, Vyle, Dylan Cole, Daniel Dociu, etc. Also traditional master painters like Richard Schmitdh, Jeremy Lipkings. Im learning mostly from the job and on the internet...and now I am spreading what I've learn over the years of observing and studying.

Chris> Happy New Years to all of you too!!! It will be even MORE AWESOME year!!! 2010

Ive been looking at some of your drawings and wondering how do you fabricate these people out of your mind without a model??? How do you get the lighting almost perfect? How long did it take you to get this good? I really want to know how you do the lighting without model, however with pencil or charcoal. I don't have a touch screen yet so i want to practice the good old fashion way XD.

Anonymous> A lots of practices from life drawing and from references...also observation. When you draw or paint something over and over many times...lighting certain position will just comes to you easily because you know where it will lid. But if I am to do something I am not use to do then I will have to use many ref and estimate/calculate how and such...
Lighting (Values) is the most difficult thing to pull of for every artist at all level. It just the matter of practice and dedication, observation and how they wheel or execute their piece.

good luck!

Hi. I was wondering, have you noticed any major differences between painting in Photoshop and painting in Gimp?

Is one better in your experience? Are they about the same?
Any problems that you couldn't overcome?

XIA said...

Anonymous> Um...interesting questions, the bottom line is both get the job done. They are very similar. I use Photoshop a lot more cuz I get them for Free thru my company. Gimp is also great and what makes it better is that it is FREE.
I would suggest you try them out. Hands on experience would explain much better than just words of advice.

Do you teach any classes in Seattle?

idrawgirls said...

Anonymous> No, I don't and I don't have any plan to do it either. :) I just like recording video in my private office. :)

Darren said...

Hello.
What tool do you use to make chest lighting in 5 to 6 step by step image?

idrawgirls said...

@Darren It is dodge tool. But my advice, use it sparingly. I hardly ever use it unless I really have to. Let it be your last options in the tool set. ;-)
