How to draw Batgirl comics

How to draw batgirl comics step by step and video tutorial.

Here is another how to draw and sketch comics characters tutorial, Batgirl.

A bit about Batgirl, Batgirl is the name of several fictional characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics, frequently depicted as female counterparts to the superhero Batman. Originally created by Bob Kane and Sheldon Moldoff, the first incarnation of the character, the "Bat-Girl" Betty Kane, debuted in Batman #139 (1961) as the sidekick to Batwoman. Following the promotion of Julius Schwartz to editor of the Batman-related comic book titles in 1964, the Bat-Girl character was removed from publication (along with Batwoman) and replaced by the "new" Batgirl Barbara Gordon, police commissioner James Gordon's daughter, in 1967. The new character was introduced in Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino's Detective Comics #359, entitled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl".

The Barbara Gordon version of Batgirl made regular appearances in DC comics from 1967 to 1988. The official retirement of Batgirl took place in Batgirl Special #1 (June 1988), which was published a few months after Barbara Gordon's shooting by The Joker in the graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke (March 1988). Editor Kim Yale and comic book author John Ostrander later reinvented Barbara Gordon as Oracle, the premier information broker of the DC Comics Universe and leader of the Birds of Prey organization.

It been almost a week since I post something. I just got a Mac! And this is my first post using a Mac mini. :) I like it a lot, but I still do use PC for most of the time and for work. :) Anyway, now I know why most artists love Mac as their personal computer, everything about it is beautiful...interface and application cosmetic design are very pretty.

Draw Anime Character Blair from Soul Eater

How to draw realistic Anime female character.  Draw Anime Character Blair (Cat Witch) from Soul Eater. How to draw Manga tutorial this one is very similar to the comics serie tutorials I did. I have stumble upon cool looking Manga and Anime Soul Eater and thought they have cool character design so I thought I would like to draw and sketch with my own take of Soul Eater Characters.

This post will be about How to draw Blair

Here is a bit about the character, Blair, from Soul Eater.
In cat form, she is basically a black cat with large yellow eyes, ears with pale bushy tips and a long curly tail, but she wears a smaller version of her witch's hat and a collar with a round bauble that has three triangles etched into it to resemble a jack-o-lantern's face.

In human form, she takes on the appearance of a young woman with a large bust size and alluring figure. She has long violet hair and a strand of her hair on each side of her face curl up and around to resemble her tail and the bauble she wears in cat form can be seen below her neck. She has a set of catlike ears, which are initially hidden by her hat. Her black witch's hat coils around at the end and retains her bright yellow eyes. She dresses in many types of revealing clothing such as tank tops and bikinis, but her signature witch outfit consists of a black-blue dress that shows off her shoulders and wraps around her neck, long sleeves that reveal her hands and shoulders, a short skirt with a white frill and long high-heeled boots that curl upwards at the toes.

Digital sketch process painting skin and chest

Painting skin and chest step by step.  Here is a digital painting process update.
Finally, I got some times to work on the previous Witch lady sketch and comp *see previous post, draw and sketch new figure. Now I went in and work on some flesh skin tone part of her body (torso and breasts) then a little bit of the facial structure. If you notice, her face is hidden in the shade (shadow) so it is very challenging and fun at the same time. It takes quite a bit of thinking and trying not to over paint the values on her face. The area around her chest receiving full or more lighting than the face so. This should be very interesting to finish up. Hopefully sometimes soon. :)

How to draw female warlock body and clothing

What kind of opacity setting I use in Digital Painting ?

What kind of opacity setting I use in Digital Painting in Photoshop and Gimp? That is one of the most asked questions on this blog.

MS: Believe me, i've watched all of your videos, and i got really inspired.
I bought my graphic tablet about a few weeks ago and i've been experimenting, checking youtube for more tutorials.
I found yours to be most helpful.
1) What kind of opacity setting you use when you paint in Photoshop?

Xia: First, I use low opacity (30-50%) to find values and move shapes/shadow around. It's kind of similar process when you sketch with pencil, you have to get a rough draft or construction lines and rough values (shading, lighting)
After I get what seems to be underpainting (close to corrected values) then I use only (70-100%) and be precise of where you put your paint and strokes using 100% help keep your color clean and not muddy. Then just use logic and intuition where to fix and use opacity according to the local values and decide whether you want soft of hard edge on that area.

MS: 2) But what confused me is, after your sketch you started on the shadows. From what i was taught i should create a new layer and set the sketch as an outline.
From what i can can tell, you used the same layer and changed opacity of the brush to make the shadows.. same for the actual painting. i need heavy tips :D

Xia: What I usually personally do is create another layer on top or under the outlines layer to paint values (shading or lighting) in the beginning. Then as it progress in to form that I want then I will forget lines, think shapes, values, and edge. If you want to add line art, add it after the painting process is done. (Unless you have scanned in inking lines as separate layer, you should put it on top of everything at all time and painting under. In that case, it shouldn't take you long to paint, just get the basic values and colors or you can push it more toward painting if you like because you want to show off the line work. if that make sense.)
then again i'm an amateur when it comes to digital painting =/

Good luck

How to set up photoshop layer in digital painting

Anonymous: How to set up or use photoshop layer in digital painting. Im so confused on the multiply thing w color,so how do you set up the layers when you go to apply a color multiply or overlay to a greyscale image without taking away from the greyscale values
also do you add the multiply to the greyscale layer your working on or the color layer you add

Thanx alot,

Xia: Wow, your question will take about 2-3 hours to answer. It is complicated but NOT, if you understand lighting and values. I use both multiply and overlay wherever it fits. The trick is KNOWING exactly how to nail values or lighting. So...DO NOT worry about color to begin with...just values first. Then once you nail black and white (gray scales) down then you can begin applying color using Multiply or Overlay ... *Believe it or not a lots of artists (pro) work in Monochromatic color scheme or Analogous color scheme first then apply color later* go read Colors VS Values tips and technique ---> then merge and still you still have to paint over on normal layer to get the best look. that's how I work nowadays.

Concept Artist Richard Anderson master concept artist interview

Concept Artist Richard Anderson Master artist interview.  He has been working on  the up coming Ridley Scott's movie Prometheus (see trailer below) and previously Guild Wars 2 Cinematic.

Richard and I have been working together for over five years and he's a great artist so I decided its time to interview him. Also I've been asking him to do some environment tutorials, it's finally finished. The amazing tutorial will be out in a couple of days. So yeah, some delicious tutorial from Richard Anderson is coming right out of the oven as of now. :)

Apart from his work in GuildWars and GuildWars 2, Richard's artwork has been published with ImagineFX, Spectrum, and many more.

So let's get start with the interview.

1.Why did you want to become a Concept Atist?

I always enjoyed comics, video games and movies. Once I found out that there were actual artist that draw and come up with all this stuff, I basically thought it was the coolest job ever for someone who loves to draw. I remember looking at random books and seeing stuff online that blew my mind, and then that’s all I wanted to do.

2. How is it in the ARenaNet and GuildWar2 team?

It’s the best! Having a director that helps and teaches is the best thing for someone who wants to move forward in there art, and the team, is insane! Everyday I look at what others are doing and am blown away by how much talent is here. It really really pushes you to do your best and work hard. It’s awesome. The game is cool to because it really allows a concept artist to really expand everything they do, there is so many different things that go into this game that you never get bored.

3. Where do you get your inspiration from?

My friends and fellow artist are a huge inspiration. I always find a lot of inspiration by looking at other artist. Classic illustrators like Robert Mcginnis, J.C. leyendecker, stuff is what I’ve been looking at lately.

4. Is your work completely digital or do you also use pencil and paper?

I do a lot of sketchbook stuff, I ride the bus, and go out and life draw a lot. My favorite thing to look at is sketchbooks, I really love to see how people work. And just lately I’ve been taking a watercolor class and messing with that. Not sure when I’ll show though, it’s a little embarresing.

5. Also, your work always has an impressionist/abstract quality to it, with very minimal details, because of this, are you conscious of trying to acheive this looseness, or is it something which always comes naturally?

I think it comes to what I feel looks right, every artist has a thing that their more keen to do and I think what im attracted to most in other art. My favorite stuff is always very stroke based and has a lot of energy so it kinda comes natural for me to try and mimic what I like to see.

6. What's your attitude towards color and do you use a color 'formula'? Do you reserve certain colors for certain moods?

Color is something like in my tutorial that you see me play with a lot of colors and kinda like the last question is something I just go for and do what looks right to me. Its important though to study and look at reference because that’s the way you can train your brain to know what you should do. Other times it’s a stylistic choice I think. So in general I think about the rules and relationships to color but I still just follow a lot of instinct I guess.

More interview with Richard Anderson, Daniel Dociu, and Jason Stoke about GuildWars2 and PAX. If you haven't seen it already.
