Hi Xia! Well done for this. I just want to ask you something that has nothing to do with this drawing. Can you just give me the difference between a drawing, a concept and an illustration. It may be very simple but it really confuses me sometimes!

Thanks and Peace! ;)

Nice sketch :) but it looks like the man i looking away. He he fighting many enemies?

That you've put arrows on to show the flow is good.

Something to add is that when drawing a fight. Don't draw when someone's hitting, but after the punch or whatever like Xia's done.

luca> Now, that's is kinda hard to explain, I guess it depends on your art directors or directions. Most of the pieces I put on this site I would consider them sketches. Sketches are not finished pieces. Illustrations are finished paintings.
Drawing is just a composition of lines by definition. Render drawing are sketches.
99% of this site are sketches (I believed), half are not so good sketches, some are really bad sketches, for instance this one...I just want to get the point across, it doesn't turn out like how I really want it to be...I will have to take more time to refine the drawing more.

pokepotter>> Thanks, I know...this one doesn't really turn out too pretty (one of my bad sketches), but it gets the point across (hopefully). And yes, he is surrounded by many opponents.
And you are right! It's the anticipation and the after effect that make us see the action, not the actual action itself. Most of the time.

Well I think it's good that you show what you consider the bad stuff, alot of people don't, and that makes you think they are exceptionally good at drawing 100% of the time. Which is a bit defeating.

Is this chunky dude going to be another new character though?

I read a post on the Myartspace blog today about how the influence of anime is not exactly a good thing for art students. I don't know. Have you ever thought about how you would be drawing or if you would be drawing if anime never made it outside of Japan?

Chris> It's really hard to get really consistently good even at the professional level. I have to keep practicing to get better all the time and try to do variety of style that I am going for. The hardest things of all is when I try out new technique or something I am not familiar with or something I have not done in a while. (like high key painting, perspective/ environment, etc.) So difficult brother!

vex> Interesting topic there, I know that there are a lot people dislike Anime and such. One of my best friend artist hates Anime to the core, but his favorite comics later on was "Blade of Immortal". What? Let me make it clear, who am I (are we) to judge if it's good or bad for art?
For me, there are only 'Good art' and 'Bad art.' I am open to all type as long as it's well executed with real skill. I am only waiting every single second of my existence to be INSPIRED, to be MOVED by some STUNNING piece of art. They stimulate my senses in the way that make me more productive and make me breath life.
*Even bad art CAN sometimes inspire you or someone.

I can see why people were saying that and that's partially WHY I decided to make this blog. I often emphasis everyone who watch the video to go LIFE DRAWING. That's the most classical form of study figure. I believe every artist SHOULD know and study the real form and have solid basic foundation before they choose their path. But the world is strange, some can do without and do great.

There are lots of great Manga and Anime(different styles), you just have to seek them out (Akira, Ghost in the Shell?)

If someone really care enough to draw and product art, they should also care to improve their skill as an artist by acquire solid classical foundation.

my two cents.
peace!

vex> Another thought...imagine if there wasn't any Rock music or Rap music...What would it be like?
Same thing...as if we don't expose by Anime, I guess. I don't like BAD Anime art, but I do like good anime art. It's like I like good hip hop, but not bad hip hop.
Thanks for the post brother, stimulate my brain.

FYI if I didn't expose to Manga when I was young (I was raised in the Far East), I probably wouldn't be making video game art. :)

Once on college, a teacher told us the 5 criteria for art. (at least according to him)

I can only remember 4 but here goes:
1 - It has to be original,
2 - be skillfully made,
3 - provoke emotion
4 - and be in a gallery.

Now the stuff he showed us almost got
the whole class running away. But I
guess he made his point, since it did qualify the 4 criteria.

But I think art is just a label you put onto things though and varies per person.

Xia you promised me to give us some more information about you man....telling me that you've be rasied in far east, you make me more curious! lol :)

Seriously, someday post us something about you, and thanks for the answer I now have a clearer idea of the difference!

Well art is subjective, so it is difficult to pin down what and what isn't art. If an unmade bed with food wrappers and condoms adorning it can be classed as art, then I'm pretty sure anything goes.

It's like the Xia man says, if it's good, it's good. I also dont think anime is in anyway detrimental to art, if it gets more people drawing then that's surely a good thing. If something is poorly drawn then it is poorly drawn no matter the subject.

Luca > I can't remember the last time Xia posmised to give personal information. I do remember people asking a LOT for it, but he never said he would give any.

If he feels like it I'm sure he will give up some more info. Remember that this is internet and privacy, specially on such public sites is something to consider.

knuckles930 > yeah, you're right. What he told me last time is that he would post some photos of his studio at ArenaNet, I didn't ask him to show us his underwear!! (lol) :)
Knuckles930 said…
Because underwear is the foremost things we are all waiting for to see on this site, of course.

Well I guess that at the work floor there isn't much time for making photo's and that is taken that its being appreciated by fellow workers and management..

Knuckle> Good point there your teacher gives. Man, I miss having school days. Thanks

Luca> Possibly, I will take some pic of the studio...I always forgot because it's not on my priority list. As for my info and life style? I am not a very good example at all I have a split personality (evil twins).

Chris> Good post man! very thoughtful.
