3D Head Reference Tool for Portrait Lighting

Every digital artist knows the frustrating cycle: you have a great character sketch, but the lighting is completely flat. You spend hours hunting online for a reference photo that matches your specific camera angle, only to find the light source is entirely wrong.

Stop guessing where your cast shadows fall.

FaceRef Studio is a lightweight, interactive 3D head reference tool built specifically to solve this exact problem for concept artists and illustrators.

FaceRef Studio Lite: Free 3D Head Reference tool for artists.

The "PureRef" of 3D Lighting

Nothing kills your creative flow state faster than constantly tabbing out of Photoshop or Procreate to check a reference. FaceRef Studio operates perfectly alongside your workflow. Just like PureRef, the window can be pinned directly on top of your drawing application and resized to fit anywhere on your screen. You get real-time, mathematically perfect shadows without ever leaving your canvas.

Dial In Perfect Shadows in 5 Seconds

Instead of relying on static, unchangeable images, you have complete control over the environment to nail your exact shading:

Dynamic 3-Point Lighting: Manipulate three independent spotlights (rotate XYZ up, down, left, and right) to create the exact shadow shapes your piece requires.
Industry-Standard Models: Switch instantly between basic geometry, the classic Asaro head planes, stylized shapes, or high-detail head models to understand complex facial anatomy.
Precision Color System: Shift your light colors using a full HSB color wheel, and change the base object color to study exactly how environmental light bounces and interacts with different skin tones.
Instant Snapshots: Found the perfect dramatic angle? Hit the camera icon to instantly save a screenshot of your lighting setup to your folder for later.
