How to draw and paint Thor

How to draw and paint Thor.  Thor digital painting sketch character concept step by step tutorial. It's been quite a little while since my last update. And this time it's THOR! I was trying to do Thor sketch quite a few times in the past few month since there is a movie coming up soon, I think it's 2011. My first few attempts fail, well I didn't post them because they are kinda suck but I might repost the quick digital painting sketch along with the new one. This one was suppose to be a quick sketch or speed painting (around 30-45 minutes) but then I got carried away and paint longer than I thought I would because I just want it to be better than it was.
Usually when I am going to come up with new painting, my goal is to make it as consistence in term or quality of art or execution, if not better than the last one I painted. I constantly try to better my skill, but it doesn't always turn out like I would imagine. It gets harder and harder, but once in a while I will have a break through in some technique or understanding of different angle to approach new painting in conceptual art. I always hope for better and all I can do is keep trying. :)

Marvel Studios

Here is Thor so far:

Anyway, a bit about Thor movie hype!

A bit about Thor and its origin:
Thor is a fictional superhero who appears in publications published by Marvel Comics. The character first appears in Journey into Mystery #83 (August 1962) and was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller Jack Kirby.
Debuting in the Silver Age of Comic Books, the character is based on the Thor of Norse mythology. Thor has starred in several ongoing series; limited series and has been a perennial member of the superhero team the Avengers, appearing in each of the three volumes.

Here is a video demo how to draw and paint THOR:

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: THOR. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Kenneth Branagh directs this fantasy epic which stars Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the ancient Norse god, Tom Hiddleston as his evil brother Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, a young woman who befriends Thor on Earth, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin. *Anything with Anthony Hopkins is pretty cool!*

As for Thor character in latest film:
Chris Hemsworth as Thor: The god of thunder based on the deity of the same name from Norse mythology. According to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood Daily blog, director Kenneth Branagh and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige chose Hemsworth after a back-and-forth process in which the 25-year-old actor was nixed early on, then given a second chance to read for the part. In an interview Hemsworth told Access Hollywood that the film stays true to the comics stating; “There’s so many different versions of the comic books, they’ve sort of bonded quite a few of them to form this particular story, but it’s all very true to the original stuff”. On his take of the character Hemsworth stated, "We just kept trying to humanize it all, and keep it very real. Look into all the research about the comic books that we could, but also bring it back to 'Who is this guy as a person, and what’s his relationship with people in the individual scenes?'". The first publicity image from the film released depicts Hemsworth in costume as Thor, illustrating elements taken from the comic character's design.

Anyway, this illustration or speed painting I am concepting has nothing to do with the movie. I just want to paint it up of how I would imagine it to be and it's just my vision of Thor and homage to the superhero mythology god. :)

Cool stuf dude! :) yeah Thor is a pretty cool character and you did a really cool painting on him.
The color scheme is very Kekai-ish, or at least it reminds me of his stuff (or should I say master-works?)

Anyways, will be looking forward for part twoooo!!!!! Until your next post, take care and all the best.

You're a fantastic artist and I aspire to your skill and motivation :)

I have trouble setting out Light sources and shadows and my drawings always seem a bit 2 dimensional :(

I like that you've used an action pose with this one. I'd like to see more of that. Great stuff!

You're amazing man, the stuff you pull out would take me a week to achieve. What kind of studies do you have?
great man.

Luca> Thanks brother, yeah I guess he sits right in the next room to me so his virus must have rubbed off on me a bit which is a good thing. I will gladly steal whatever I can take from his skill (Palette, Color schemes, etc. :)

Cat> Thanks, as for light source...all artists have problem with that no matter beginner or advance. I would say watch more of my tutorial might help (Ask Luca or other regular visitors, they do help!) and practice practice...then read lots of material. FYI I didn't just start drawing yesterday you know. it takes time and study.

Evesweater> Thanks, sometimes it just came to me. Most of the time at work I have to do static post because then people who take it to model will have easier time. So I kinda get stuck in static most of the time. but will try to loosen up a bit.

Rocha Art> Thanks brother, well thanks...I've been doing this professionally for many years. So I usually watch how other artists work (nowadays it's a lot easier with video, back then...it was just still images that I can study and analyze, you guys have it better these days)...study and keep practicing. Draw and paint everyday...and life drawing session to draw from real people. :)

Cat> I've sticked around here for quite some years and hopefully will never leave! I suggest you to take some of Xia's feature tutorials. I would recommend you one of my favorites: "Face Constructed 2"

http://www.idrawgirls.com/how_to_paint_portrait.html

It's quite hard to paint faces but Xia explains REALLY WELL and if you watch it multiple of times until you totally learn his tips and apply them to your works. I think its one of my favorites!

Other than that I'd suggest you to prepare some basic still life at home and paint them. it definitely HELPS understand real life. Here are 2 of my studies (oils and digital) :

Xia> I'm infected with kekai's work dude - the virus passes online as well :) You are lucky to sit next to him, I am lucky to have came across his works through you.

Do you use only one layer?
and should i use only one layer and avoid using multiply layers?
idrawgirls said…
Anonymous> Yes and NO...it's a complex answer. I get it all the time. :) Goto Q/A section on the right hand column of the blog, you will find more than your answer.
Good luck
