2011 is the year of the rabbit

Draw and paint woman and bunnies.  Happy holiday and new year! 2011 is around the corner and it is, according to Chinese calender, a year of the RABBIT.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit, which begins on February 3 (Chinese new year), 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012. The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac, which consists of 12 animals signs. The Rabbit is a lucky sign, or so they say.
Now that I think about it, I should have painted year of the tiger last year, or this year actually 2010. But oh well. Well the new year is around the corner, I just want to wish everyone to have a good and successful year. I have more than a few goal to accomplish in the coming year and I hope you have plan as well.
I'm planing to do more and better with idrawgirls.com, of course. I have no idea what it will be yet, but I am thinking about it everyday. Well, I'm also hoping to get a few digital comics for tablet out also.
Then personally, I am learning how to read faster or speed read. A few weeks ago I was really a slow reader, then I found some speed reading method on the web (check out speed reading) then I try it out. Now I can actually read more than +300 wpm and 70% comprehension.  They said some people can read +1,000 wpm with +90% comprehension.  I would love to finish reading that fast so I could learn many things from books in such lightening speed.  Thus increase productivity and more time to paint.  Hopefully it will get better. Then I will also learn how to write better. Writing is never really my thing, but it might come in handy some day. One more thing, I also plan to run +30 miles a week. Currently, I run almost everyday about 3-4 miles per day, some day 2 miles, so it comes about 20 miles a week. Next year, I am hoping to turn it up a few knots.  
Oh year, one last thing, I would love to paint MORE, better and faster!  Hopefully the amount of work will exceed 2010 in quantity and quality.  Cheers!

How to paint Emma Frost

How to paint Emma Frost.  Here is a final version of Emma Frost.  I've been procrastinating or busy with other stuff.  Finally, I got some times to finish Emma Frost.  Though honestly the outcome of the final image is not what I am expecting.  I usually like loose brush strokes and painterly image on my piece.  This one is a little bit off from my usual painting.  It turns out a bit too tighten and a bit trying a little too hard, in other words I might have went too far.  There are things that bothers me in this image, most of all edges.  I did not successfully display hard edges, soft edges and lost edges. It is as if  poorly accomplished.  I wish I could have execute it better in term of painterly (I don't know what that really meant, but I like it a little more loose).  I will probably take this illustration back and rework it again, but now I am just going to let it go for a while.  Anyway it does not turn out bad but just different than most of my work or what I am trying to achieve.  
On that other hand, I think we all learn something along the way whether we actually nail the final result or not.  In the process of making this illustration, I actually discovered some new things and explored territory that I've never been.  So I'm sure somehow it will strengthen my skill with my next piece.  It was a different direction over all.  Hopefully the more we paint, the better we will get.

Learn to paint on ipad with Sketch Club application

How to draw a knight on ipad.  Learn to paint on ipad with Sketch Club application. This is a second tutorial of how to draw and paint on ipad tablet, it is a bit more intermediate.  You can watch the first ipad painting video tutorial and review over at Drawing on ipad with Sketch Club.  The application, Sketch Club created by Jim Scott, is capable of doing a really decent speed painting.  I like it a lot for many reason.  It is cheap and for the price it is one of the best painting application around the apple app store.

This post will be a how to draw and paint a knight armor concept design.  As I do with any of my digital painting tutorials, I start off with a rough line drawing to get the idea of the pose and overall composition.  Then I usually paint over the figure with just one medium gray tone to create the silhouette.  When I have the silhouette, it is easier for me to visualize the figure in more detail and find the way to figure out the light source.

After that I will go in with big brush to paint the light source and assign value to the character or figure.  The key is to make it simple first, do not over complicate things or worry about tiny detail in the beginning.

Once I have basic shape with the light source or assign value, it is easier for me to begin apply color onto the figure.  Since this version of the app does not yet have "Overlay" function, we will have to paint in the color.  If you know how to get the value accurately, then it should not be hard for you to paint without overlay.  The trick is that you will just have to put color in the light area, and leave the shadow be dark.  Because you cannot see color in the shadow therefore there should not be any color in the shadow area, it will mostly be gray or desaturated color of warm or cool.

Drawing on ipad with Sketch Club application

How to draw portrait on ipad.  Drawing on ipad with Sketch Club application made by the awesome Jim Scott.  And who would think ipad application would capable of doing such decent painting and sketch.  Two thumbs up for Jim Scott, the creator of the application called Sketch Club.  This post will be a how to draw and paint demo tutorial on using ipad as a drawing pad.  A friend of mine or former colleague at ArenaNet Jim Scott, one of the lead programmer on GW and GW2, creates this painting application for ipad called "Sketch Club".  It is a very cool and beyond basic sketch.  I try it out and was pretty happy how the app works so far.  I feel like I can do so much with it within the first and second trial. I just begin experiment with the app by doing a speed painting piece demo.  It turns out better than I expect from an app from ipad.  I can actually draw and paint like a real painting application on normal PC.  Well, even if it is limited compare to Photoshop but it has what it takes to get the job done beautifully.

So here is my tutorial demo using Sketch Club application on ipad.  This one took me about 30 minutes and it turns out well.  I didn't know what to sketch on so I just sketch what I do best, a female warrior.  :-)  Yeah, it's best to test out something with what you already know how to do it well.

Emma Frost X-men first class

How to paint Emma Frost X-men first class.  Here is the final version of the Emma Frost I was working on.  I have to admit that I did a few version of the characters more than I needed to.  But for some reason there is some mystical aura about the character that make me want to create or paint her in the right way (well, according to me).

Anyway, I did a digital drawing version of  Emma, how to draw comics girl Emma Frost, Painting X-men first class Emma Frost and so on.

In this tutorial, I actually did it slightly different than the previous speed painting (Not time-lapse, actual speed painting).  This one is more like a pin up girls painting.  Most of the time in painting, I solely focus on lighting and values and more often than not the main light source, what dominant color that might be, will dominate the whole image.  But in this one (pin up), I am focusing on more of skin tone and pigment, not the overall lighting.  So in this tutorial I am playing around with the variation of the skin colors.

If you are painting pin up and focusing on skin pigment of the character, then it is better to work on painting with color base for skin rather than monochromatic.  What I did was working on monochrome to get the very basic values, then early on I assign color base for skin tone.  Then I apply the variation of colors and painting color in there with color right of the bat, rather than relying on monochromatic.  It is a little more difficult to paint with colors.

But the best way to practice this is probably in life drawing either figure or portrait session.  You can just use oil paint or your laptop to do skin color study. While I was working on this illustration, I changed direction a few times.  So it took me a long while, probably about 10-12 hours going back and forth.  I will show you those images down below on the post.

This one is a different version that I intended and thought it would be cooler. But then I went back to the original version.

This one I intended to make the image look cold by applying purple as some sort of under lighting. Though it is not really what I am looking for therefore I went back to the original concept.

Update 12/16/2010 Have a few more hours for painting Emma, I decided to change costume a little bit.  Also I was not really happen with how the shinny leather turned out previously so I fixed it up.  Currently her torso material is more of what I am looking for.  Then I apply some blue light hint on her shoulders.  As I apply more light and textures, I am going to have to touch up the face and the rest of the illo.  Anyway, I am trying to push my limit on this one so I am going to spend more time to finish her up.  :-)
