Gears of War 3 trailer Dust to Dust. I love the the characters and creatures in this series and the game play is awesome! There is no better combination that an chainsaw and a machine gun. “Gears of War” is the first game (It was ZZT is an ANSI character-based computer game, created in 1991 by Tim Sweeney of Epic Games. Then 1998 Unreal series had mass success before Gears of War, yeah.) developed by Epic. “Gears of War” thrusts gamers into a deep and harrowing story of humankind’s epic battle for survival against the Locust Horde. Gears of War is a military science fiction third-person shooter video game developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was initially released as an exclusive title for the Xbox 360 in November 2006 in North America, Australia, and most of Europe and included a "Limited Collector's Edition" with added content and an art book titled Destroyed Beauty that detailed much of the game's back-story. The game focuses on the troops of Delta Squad as they fight to save the human inhabitants of the fictional planet Sera from a relentless and virtually unstoppable subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. The player assumes the role of Marcus Fenix, a former prisoner and war-hardened soldier. The game is based on the use of cover and strategic fire for the player to advance through the scenarios; a second player can play cooperatively through the main campaign to assist. The game also features several online multiplayer game modes for up to eight players. 




Love the music from the trailer, it is beautiful but a little creepy at the same time.

Detective Dee trailer awesome!  I thought I would share it with you guys.  Also it is a US version official trailer.
This looks so good, I am going to see this. I am a big fan of Tsui Hark since "Swordman" way back when I was a little kid. Sammo Hung is doing choreography in the movie, he is always on my top list of the badass Kung fu masters. Not to mention Li BingBing, one word "HOT".

Hair seems like a very complicate subject. There are so so many request via facebook, email, etc. for me to do hair drawing tutorial. Finally, here it is. First, like I said so many time, simplicity is the key to painting or drawing. Same here, when you take a look at a person's hair, you mind tell you to think hair as a complex subject. Though, if you really take a look and try to simplify it into shape and form by trust your eyes to see it for only light and shadow. The tips is to squint, like in painting, to blur things out. It is easier to see the simplify form of hair when squint. A lot of you might not get squinting in the beginning, it took me many time to actually squint to see simple form of the subject I am drawing or painting.
Once you get it to simplify into simple shapes, you will have a lot easier time drawing hair. I explain it in the Video tutorial that break hair down into big simple shape for each clump of hair. One you can break it down in to simple 5-6 group of hair, you then have to look for shadow of the those shapes. From one simple shape to another, once you see the shadow, then you can begin to shade or render from there


This is a very simple and easy to follow tutorial of how to draw hair, I would not know how to explain it any easier than this.

Light and shadow create illusion of value

Light and shadow can create distorted illusion of value in our perception.  I think this post will be very valuable to all artists whether you are advance or beginner.  I read a very interesting book called "Color and light" by one of the most awesome artist of all time James Gurney.  *You can also check my art books collection and recommendation here: http://www.idrawgirls.com/a-store.html. Under the Light and Form chapter it has really interesting lesson about separation of light and shadow.  He talked about how light and shadow can trick our visual system.
Then over the weekend I accidentally stumble upon this video on Youtube that actually demonstrate the same exact things Gurney was explaining in art terminology of how light and shadow can totally fool us.
In the video below, if you just look at the checker board without thinking much about it.  You probably assume that the white checker boxes will always have lighter shade or value than the dark checker board even thought it is under the shade.  But not always, lighting can trick you.

Below is an image that show you the value. You can right click to save the image then open it in Photoshop (or any digital painting program). Then you use the color picker tool to select the color and value on the gray rectangle, on the checker square #1 and #2 . Check the HSB scale and you will find out that they all have the same value of brightness = 48 or close.
Because of the shadow cast over the checker board, the square #1 and #2 can have exact same value or shade.

Naked eyes can be reliable most of the time, but sometimes it can play against us as painters.  Though there are tools that we can use to help us look for the actual value when paint from life or digitally. Here are some tool to help you compare values on the cube while painting:

Then cut them up into 10 pieces also cut off the circle hole to see thru.

How to paint Conan the Barbarian

How to paint Conan the barbarian.  Conan the Barbarian digital painting video tutorial.  Here is a new version of Conan the barbarian that will be in theater in late 2011.  It is a speed painting study video of one of the screenshot from a movie.  If you have seen my speed painting or digital painting videos regularly, you will notice that I usually start of with lines, then paint a monochromatic value and so on.
In this painting video, I took a different approach in my own study.  I just try to get the shape right away without using or depending on any line work.  If you have a model, landscape setting or references, first thing you should do when paint is to paint the biggest shape you see.  Also try to get the shape as accurate as you can, then second biggest and so on.  That is what I did in this painting, I capture the biggest shape and simplify everything in the image or make them simple shape to begin with.  Then once you get most of the main elements all together, you can start assigning value and refine the shape.  Also watch for edges whether it is hard edge, soft edge or lost edge.  Speedpainting is a good practice for quick exercise either value study or color study.  The task force you to simplify things that you painted, no matter how complex it will be.  It trains your eyes and your brain to work together and think quick.  One of the most important trick is squint, and squint really good.  If you don't know how, don't worry.  It took me a few month to actually understand the concept of squinting in painting, and eventually, with time, I kind of get it.

Asuka Evangelion color illustration sketch step by step

Asuka Evangelion color illustration sketch step by step.  Evangelion was one of my favorite Anime show when I was younger, how could I not love it.  Super cool robots, great story line even though it is kinda weird, and cute female lead characters.  Well, I used to like Rei Ayanami, but now that I think about it long enough.  I think Rei has issues, big issue like personality disorder of some sort.  So she is drop off from my favorite list.  Still I like the design of the character.  Asuka is always one of my favorite Anime characters, though a bit hot head and aggressive, but she is a lot more normal as a human being.
Anyway, this Asuka painting takes me about 4-5 hours.  Well, if she doesn't look like the one in Anime, it is because I re-imagine or paint her in my own take.  It just came to me.  I already have the sketch that I select from one of my life drawing sketchbook.  I scanned it in then trying to make some sort of cool character out of it.  Eva just came to mind, because of the post possibly.
So I begin rough out the red color over the female anatomy sketch.  Then add Asuka's costume design line work.  Then I paint over the line.  **A lot of you guys ask me if I paint over the line, YES, I do.  I always paint over the line and try to make all the line disappear.  But half the time I like to leave some lines in on purpose to make it look rough, loose and unfinished appearance.

Female figure drawing five to ten minutes from life drawing session.

Female figure drawing five to ten minutes from life drawing session.  This are another set of figure studies I did from session on late July.  The poses are 5 to 10 minutes gesture study.  Ten minutes sometimes it is enough to get lighting down but not quite enough to get all the detail.  I am planing to attend the longer session probably 25 minutes pose.  Twenty five minutes is good for studying anatomy and give you a little more time to observe how muscle work together.  Longer than that is a little too long for my taste, but if it is a great pose with great lighting I could do it for possibly an hour.  For sketch or drawing study from life longer than an hour, I have never really done it.  Most of the time I will finish it within forty-five minutes then I don't know what else I could add to.  Longer than an hour in my opinion is great for painting.  But again unless the pose is really awesome, I would invest my time drawing and studying them.
If I have my own studio and model that I could direct the pose and the lighting, I could draw a long time.  But you have to realize all the life drawing I do are from open session and usually there are about ten to twenty people attend.  Sometime if I get lucky, I will score a good seat with good lighting in front of me.  But most of the time, they are not that great.  But I will still have to go it to keep up the skill and it is not so expensive.  If I have more money in my pocket, I would probably get my own studio setting.  With that the result would be a lot more dramatic and better because you will have more control over what you really want to draw and study.
