Hong Qigong Kungfu master final process

How to paint dragon warrior.  Here is the final process of the Northern Beggar Hong Qigong, 洪七公, character concept design. I had sometimes to look over and finalize the concept image finally. It isn't much different from the last post, just some minor tweak on the color, adding some depth and minor detail on clothing. Mostly it is still pretty the same, just a little more refine.
I probably spend more time looking and analyzing rather than actually painting or adding more detail on the final process. Now I can actually move on and do some more stuff.

As for more videos, I am pretty sure they will be coming out. Just been very busy and got a cold/flu from someone somewhere the past couple weeks. Not so much fun. :P

Here is the final image

Dragon Kungfu Master digital painting process continue

How to paint dragon warrior.  Dragon Kungfu Master digital painting process continue.
Hello guys, It's been a very busy week and I finally get some time to work more on this piece though I felt a little rusty and clumsy. It's going slow since I haven't touch it in about a week or so. Sometimes it is good to leave the painting then come back, but don't leave it for too long. It could loose the spontaneous and focus. Anyway, I'm trying to be as continuity and make it look better. Hopefully, the next time I get around to paint this one, it will be finished.

Here is the previous post painting process: Dragon Warrior Kung Fu Master painting process.

If you like this particular post these following tutorial with video will help you work on your illustration and character design. Go watch male anatomy study, Drawing body muscle torso anatomystep by step and video. Then Drawing arm muscles bicep tricep video that will help you understand how to illustrate arm from drawing to finish rendering digitally.

The following videos are tutorial on drawing and rendering faces, mostly males. How to draw man's head basic and Draw and render human head with different light sources. (This one analyze how different directional lighting reflect values arrangement on facial structures.)
I would also recommend to go watch more intermediate tutorial such as Character Design Face Male Merchant Character, or Drawing Male Face Swordman and Learn how to draw and paint face.
For female portrait tutorial go watch, they are slightly different in the approach but same way of construction of the sketch, How to draw lesson girl face, How to draw person head basic. And digital painting tutorial rogue samurai female. As for the face or head (women, female) Draw girl's face how to lesson video and step by step and learn how to draw face, woman. These tutorials should be very helpful for you guys.

Apart from female face drawing tutorials, there are also figure tutorials such as How to draw female body torso step by step (Easy and simple lesson for beginners on how to start drawing female body.) and how to draw woman figure hip pelvis (This one I show the simple way to draw pelvis, butts, and legs). How to draw face

How to draw face.  Learn drawing girl face (or I should say a woman or female facial figure, portrait in correct term.), Learn to draw Face, How to lesson step by step realistic face online lesson.

I feel like I did not try hard enough of the first face tutorial that I made so I make another one. I think it is a bit more effort since the first one I just make it really quick and easy.
BELOW is a step by step Still Images instruction on how to draw face.
This is not by any mean the ONLY way to draw face. This tutorial I present just show you how I personally and usually do it step by step.  There is also a video instruction at the bottom of the post.
Here is the final drawing of a girl's face.
how to draw female portrait lesson, drawing tutorial
I am back with another tutorial this time I use graphite or pencil (3b to 5b are the range of blackness I personally like) . I am going to go very basic on this one from start to finish including a bit of pencil rendering.

And some good tunes will also help with portrait or figure study. Usually for me these few songs below are great. You can press forward for the next song.

1) I usually start with an egg shape drawing, very old school and traditional and it quick for me. On this one I am going to angle it a bit so the face will be 3/4 instead of the frontal shot. Always attach the neck and a bit of shoulder with the head when doing face, it gives you more of an illusion of this is part of a person. When you see an illusion of this is a part of a person, you will do a better job filling the rest in, instead of just an outline of egg shape or oval.

How to draw face step 1
2) Imagine a flat plane on front surface of an egg, think in three dimension, then draw two vertical lines along the edge of your imaginary plane. After that, draw a vertical line to split the flat plane in half from top to bottom. Then draw a horizontal line to divide the top and bottom distance in half. This horizontal line would be where humans eyes should be, they are usually right in the middle of the face horizontally. But most of the time we don't really see that because our hair deceives us.

3) This step, I add two more horizontal line on top and bottom of the existing one. These line will help me indicate how tall should the eyes be in comparison to the rest of the face.
Another mark for the bottom of her nose, it is half way in between the first horizontal line and the bottom of her chin. And again in between the nose mark and the bottom of the chin half way should be where her mouth is.

4) Now, I draw the eyes, it should no be taller than the distance of the top and bottom horizontal lines that I added on to the first horizontal. I draw the corner of both eyes in relation to the first eye's indication line. Also the distance between the two eyes should equal one eye. So when you draw, imagine there is an invisible eye in between them. Then I begin to draw the nose, notice that I did not draw the whole nose. Why? Because in reality when you see the whole nose you tempt to draw the whole nose as you see. But if you paint a lot or draw a lot from life (especially in painting). You will notice, from squinting to find value in painting or rendering, that the value of the physical nose compare to the rest of the face is not at its darkest value to be able to put them in line drawing. If you were to draw a simple face which using black or darkest value to define the line drawing. The only part of the nose that should appear in line drawing should only be the bottom of the nose. Go watch How to draw nose for more detail. Because that's where it casts the shadow as strong as a person eyes' line, eyelashes, and lips. (Make sense?) Then I finish this one off with the upper lips.
I also make the mark on the right side of the head where the top part of her ear should be (same level as eyes). Then another for ear lobe, it should be a bit above the nose mark.

How to draw face step 2
5) Clean up the construction lines.

6) Now I add in eyebrows, the head of the eyebrow be about the same distance as the eye's corner horizontally, but the tail can be longer. Then I add a line to suggest her lower lip.

7) Now I draw some hair indication around the top of her skull. Some of it should cover top half of the skull or a bit less if she should pull her hair back. Then I put in an ear.

8) After all the frame work is done, now I can start to go in and tighten up some of the facial feature, I usually like to begin with her eyes.
How to draw face step 3

9) Then I work my way down to her nose, lip and such, but nothing too dark, just light rendering to get all the indication of feature detail down first.

10) Now, I am just indicating where would I place my shadow areas if the light coming from in front of the face. At this stage, I render very lightly just so that I know where to place darkest dark on the final rendering.

11) Then I fill in her hair and render a little bit.

12) Since I think the overall face looks ok, now I am going to finalize the drawing. The usual areas where shadow hits the darkest dark are eye sockets, under the nose, under the upper lip, and above the chin (underneath the lower lip).  Go see How to draw lips for more detail on mouth.  The mid tone shadow are usually appeared on the side of her face and under her cheekbone (see as illustrate below).

How to draw face step 4

13) Now I start to finalize the drawing from area to area, begin with her left eye. Go watch How to draw eyes for more detail on eyes drawing and shading.  Then from here I use the existing value of this particular area to compare to the rest of the final rendering.

14) Then I go for the other eye, and compare value (always compare value for the rest of the drawing).

15) After I get both eyes, then I begin to work on the rest of the face start with the darkest value like around the nose, lips, and chin.

16) Now I have the whole face render, and I have to do the same for hair. For more detail go watch How to draw hair.  (Darker hair has stronger contrast and hight light, and lighter hair usually have less contrast.)

How to draw face
17) Now the whole face is done, all I have left to do is to finish up the background to make it a little more appealing. So I scribble in the background to make the white on her face pop out even more.  You can also check out the Premium +2 hours video tutorial on How to draw portrait.

18) Finish

Digital Painting Color harmony using cool and warm

How to paint color in photoshop and get color harmony

Caolan> I was wondering if you could explain how you manage to blend your colours so well. My practices always turn out having that fakish 5yr-old-with-a-crayon look.

Xia> As for Blending, you probably mean establishing soft edge or lost edge . There are three important rules of painting which are shape, values, and edges. It sounds really simple, but values alone can take more than a decade to master. I don't usually blend I use soft brush and hard brush, they are sufficient enough for me. Blending does do good job with certain custom brushes, I don't really like the blending on default brushes (round)
As for why your painting looks like crayon stuff....probably because you are using too many colors and not focusing on values (for more detail of what I meant go read Color vs Values tips and technique. )or there is no color temperature and harmony between cool and warm. If you look at movie screenshots or good photography...there aren't that many colors in the shot or I should say you have to harmonize your colors and figure out how to tight them together using values and balance between cool and warm. But before that, I suggest work in monochrome color scheme for a while then add one color at the time. Reason for that is to introduce you to the one dominant color of the over all image then secondary then so forth. Then you can move on after that.

I would recommend read more tip and technique on the right hand column of the blog then you will understand more and practice, practice, practice. :)

peace,

Dragon Warrior Kung Fu Master painting process.

How to paint dragon warrior. Dragon Warrior Kung Fu master painting process. Here is a continuation of digital painting process from the previous Lone Warrior Kung Fu master dude sketch.
The concept character is inspired by the fictional character "Northern Begger" Hong QiGong (洪七公; pinyin: Hóng Qī Gōng).

Have some more times to play around with the image process. There still a lot to be done, correcting the color values, adding under lighting and refine the little detail here and there, hopefully the next post will be the final step by step process.

Here is the color concept so far:

Three important rules for Painting and digital painting.

Three important rules for Painting and digital painting.

These rules apply to beginners and novice alike, they are simple but if you apply them correctly your painting, concept, and illustration will be awesome. Digital and traditional painting contain similar rules, the only different is basically the tools and the application. Digital painting is probably 100 times easier than real oil paint for so many reason (just undo or saving as many versions as you want in digital is enough, in traditional you can go back there is no redo...so it's difficult, very difficult.)

Soulmania> Do you have any good tips for how to go about painting in Photoshop?

Xia> Try to keep everything simple to begin with and focus on these three rules
1) Shapes (Composition, silhouette and/or correct drawing). Just practice a lot of drawing from life and from ref.

2) Values (Let just focus first on get the lighting correctly via monochromatic or achromatic, then you can apply some colors as you advance further in your illustration process. Trust me, this will work. For exercises and more tips on values go see -Values exercises study shade and -Colors VS Values tips and technique

3) Edges (Soft/Hard and lost) In real life most edges look soft because our eyes are constantly moving. An edge will only assume its sharpness if we specifically focus on it. Therefore, it is best to keep the edges soft in general unless you want to draw attention to a certain feature as is the case with the focal area.

The other situation in which to use a sharp edge is when you want to make a certain feature appear to advance. But, in general, avoid excessive use of hard edges because they work against the creation of realism. On the other hand, a painting totally devoid of hard edges tends to look uninteresting. So, the solution is to put in a few hard edges but not too many.

Then there are also lost edges. These edges are usually applied when two neighboring shapes have the same value.

The whole thing starts with a visible edge and when this edge enters an area of equal values it becomes invisible or gets lost. Further down, the edge reappears where the value start to divers again.

The eye has a natural tendency to fill in the lost edge. The use of lost edges is artistically very powerful and should be part of your repertoire of tricks. Allowing the colors of one form to work themselves into the neighboring planes of equal value is a delightful way to loosen up a painting and make it visually dynamic. Note that a painting for some reason, as it progresses, has a tendency to tighten up.

In conclusion, there are three types of edges: the soft edge, the hard edge, and the lost edge. Most of the edges are on the soft side. Hard edges should be used sparingly with the intent of attracting attention or to advance certain features. The lost edge is usually used where values of neighboring forms become equal. They serve as a way to loosen up a painting.

Some recommendation from reader that I should show what they look like. Agreed and thanks for pointing that out. ;)
Here is an example for you guys to visually distinguish the different types of edges.

This painting is from the Great master painter Frank Frazetta who will forever inspires us all.

How to draw female face

How to draw female face.  How to draw woman head or female portrait, woman face instruction: Drawing Girl face: Learn step by step tutorial start from line draw to graphite (pencile) render. Here is another attempt to create a how to draw sexy girl feature or portrait tutorial instruction.

how to draw female face

Another Step by step drawing tutorial
A head or face tutorial this time I use graphite or pencil (3b to 5b are the range of blackness I personally like) . I am going to go very basic on this one from start to finish including a bit of pencil rendering.
Below is a step by step how to:
On this one I shorten some basic beginning up a bit:
If you want more detail how to start face frame structure go to

1) I usually start with an egg shape drawing, very old school and traditional and it quick for me. On this one I am going to angle it a bit so the face will be 3/4 instead of the frontal shot. Always attach the neck and a bit of shoulder with the head when doing face, it gives you more of an illusion of this is part of a person.

3) Now, I draw the eyes, it should no be taller than the distance of the top and bottom horizontal lines that I added on to the first horizontal.
4) Now I add in eyebrows and hair indication, the head of the eyebrow be about the same distance as the eye's corner horizontally, but the tail can be longer. Then I add a line to suggest her lower lip.

5) After all the frame work is done, now I can start to go in and tighten up some of the facial feature, I usually like to begin with her eyes.
6) Then I work my way down to her nose, lip and such, but nothing too dark, just light rendering to get all the indication of feature detail down first.

The usual areas where shadow hits the darkest dark are eye sockets (for more detail on drawing eye go to How to draw eyes video tutorial), under the nose, under the upper lip, and above the chin (underneath the lower lip).

9) Now I start to finalize the drawing from area to area, begin with her left eye. Then from here I use the existing value of this particular area to compare to the rest of the final rendering.
Then I go for the other eye, and compare value (always compare value for the rest of the drawing).
10) After I get both eyes, then I begin to work on the rest of the face start with the darkest value like around the nose (more detail on drawing nose go to How to draw nose video tutorial), lips (How to draw lips in detail), and chin.

11) Now I have the whole face render, and I have to do the same for hair. (Darker hair has stronger contrast and hight light, and lighter hair usually have less contrast.)
