BulletStorm inspired speed painting process

Speed painting tutorial Bullet Storm.  I've been enjoying Bullet Storm for the past few days. The game looks gorgeous and the game play is awesome. It is pretty violent, but really what else do we expect from 1st person shooter games. We buy and play shooter games because we want to, well, shoot! I would not recommend it for kids under 17 though because it is ultra violent and tons of blood splatting action.
Then it's time to paint but I couldn't get the fun off of my mind. So I decided to just paint a piece inspired by Bullet Storm.
In this speedy, I used tons of custom brushes. Yes, I think it is time for me to really go all out with custom brushes. Since I started this blog, I've been holding out on using custom brushes just to get the point across. Get the foundation first, which are shape (correct drawing), value, color and edges. Once you get it, no matter what brush you use, it will be good.
This piece, I basically start out very much the same with a lot of my work. There are 2 ways I start either with line drawn or silhouette. Well, the line drawn will end up being silhouette or shape. So yeah basically both are very similar. Then I try to figure out the lighting (value), then hue (color), then play around with edges and harmonize the piece.  This one took me almost two hours.  Fun time.
Ok enough blabbing...

Here is a final speedie of BulletStorm

Below are step by step process painting BulletStorm inspired painting.
And below is what blasting on my headphone when I was painting the scene. There are a few songs, click fast forward for the next.  I love these tones of aggressive riff compose with war drum beats. They help me get lost in my own imagination.  Or was it the composer's imagination?  ;-)

Sometimes you have to wait a little while for music player clip to show up.

How to draw Manga Kenpachi from Bleach

How to draw Manga Kenpachi from Bleach.  Learn how to draw Manga, Anime, and comics. Drawing and sketching anime technique for manga, cartoon and comics. Learn to draw with tips from Video and step by step tutorial.

I usually look at the image and try to break it down into simple geometry shapes.  It is a lot easier to draw once you observe the over all shape of the object or person you are trying to draw.  I usually start of using circle as a base for character's skull, then next step would be figuring out the next geometry form to fit into the image.

Kenpachi is a muscular Shinigami with a wild and aggressive appearance that fits his personality. He wears a sleeveless captain's haori that has a ragged look to it (which belonged to the previous captain and was taken after his defeat). He styles his spiked-hair with small bells at its tips and wears a special eyepatch on his right eye, created by the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, to suppress his vast amount of spiritual energy. When he makes his first appearance the eyepatch is more elegant having a gold-like lining and a chain as one of the straps, this changed after his defeat by Ichigo and has since become a normal black eyepatch with normal straps. He has green eyes, pronounced hairless eyebrow ridges and a huge scar running down the left side of his face.

Below is a drawing diagram of Kenpachi's face break down so it is easier to get the proportion right for beginner.
Here is Kenpachi final sketch

Below is a video instruction how to draw Manga, Kenpachi from Bleach.

Below are step by step how to draw Manga Kenpachi line by line almost.

From 1-2) You can see that I just draw basically the base sketch lines for Kenpachi's head foundation.  So that I can us it to build more his facial structure and more detail.
3-4)  Once I have the head constructed, I will add vertical line to split the face in half measurement.  Then I will draw horizontal line across his face half of the head's height for establishing eyes' base.  Then I will sketch in eyes, nose and mouth as instruct on the video tutorial.

6-7) I keep refining the base sketch so that all the elements will be at the most accurate positions.  Once I have all the foundation sketch in place, I then will start drawing darker line and sketch out additional detail (as seen in 8-9).

10)  Now we have the foundation sketch in place, we can finalize drawing and add more detail as instructed in the video.

Using brushes in Photoshop to create edges

Painting edges in illustration.  Digital Painting Technique, using brushes in Photoshop.
Brush is a very essential tool for painting. Without it, there would not be a painting. In traditional oil painting, there are many different kind of brushes for you to pick from. Though the most common brush many painters use are simple round and flat brushes. With just two simple kind of brushes, good painters can achieve an amazing piece without having to have any special fan brush or other texture creating tools.
The same principle apply in digital painting. Basically in most painting program (Photoshop CS, Painter series, Gimp, etc.), we have default round brush soft and hard. And with just these default brushes, we should also be able paint a good piece without having to use any fancy custom brushes. I am not suggesting that we should not use custom brushes. I use a lot of custom brushes in my painting, and I strongly encourage you guys to use them in digital painting. Only one thing, I believe we should be able to paint well with the basic tools first and foremost. Most of all we should understand the core principle of painting such as shapes, values and edges.  See "three important rules for paintings" for more detail.
What custom brushes do best is creating interesting edges and textures in Photoshop and Gimp. Sometimes it mimics the look of the oil painting with beautiful strokes and textures.
Anyway, I just lost my train of thought. I just remember that I just want to talk about "edges" in this post. Any brushes, no matter how awesome it looks, will not be much use if we do not understand edges. In painting, digital or traditional, we use edges to bring out an image from the empty canvas. Painting with great use of edges often look really powerful. I would love it if I can be better at applying edges in my own painting. It takes me years to try to understand edges. To me, the concept is very abstract and often difficult to apply and master. There are three type of edges; hard edge, soft edge and lost edge.
We can achieve these edges using just default brushes (soft and hard). Hard round brush can easily create a really strong hard edge. And soft round brush is perfect for soft edge and lost edge.

Below are the sample of edges in digital painting.
digital painting technique

*In some case value range, color range, softness and hardness could fall in between.

Here is the image I've been working on, still very rough.  But it can still roughly demonstrate edges.

Achieving looseness in painting, digital painting thought

Photoshop painting tutorial achieving painterly effect or looseness in digital painting.  my thought on digital painting.
Many people asked me how did I make my digital painting in Photoshop looks so traditional like and loose. How do I make my piece look so analog instead of look very digital? Well, I've been thinking about it for a long while. As I analyzed how I paint and doodle around in Photoshop with my Wacom tablet and pen. I was thinking possible because I used to paint in gauche and acrylic before I even know digital painting exist? I don't really know, but I know what should my painting look like in the end. And possibly because I admire many oil painters such as John Singer Sargent, John Williams Waterhouse, Ander Zorn, Rick Berry, Richard Schmid, and Frank Frazetta. They are master oil painters and I always hoping that some day I could do something as great or somehow close to that caliber of work.
Anyway, I think the work of most artists often reflect their taste, influences or mentors. I love having brush strokes in my piece, not all of us like that. Some like their art work to be smooth and tight, some love airbrush work. But me, personally, I am not a big fan of airbrush or art work that are really tight. Though more often than not, I really love a lot of them and always wonder how they achieve such effect. But my most favorite remains painterly effect or looseness. And most painters who paint from light or "Direct painting" like Sargent, Mullins and Schmid are always my most favorite.

In humble my opinion, if you try to achieve looseness of traditional medium look in digital painting.  I would suggest play around with brush strokes.  And more importantly, you have to know how and where to define edges.  There are hard edge, soft edge and loose edge.  Don't try to make your painting looks too smooth.  If you can do that, then your digital art work would definitely look more like traditional work.
*More on edges go read "Three important rules for painting."

Craig Mullins once states, "So in digital terms, leave the airbrush and smudge tools alone and use a flat brush. I think the give-away for digital is the slickness. Finding the edge of forms is the first step to good shape design. Hope this helps!"

I was reading "Alla Prima" by Richard Schmid last night. He said something that I think you guys might find really useful. You can also apply that to practice of painting. To get your painting to look loose is not to let yourself loose.
He said, "Looseness is NOT a frivolous departure from control, quite the opposite. It arise from the freedom which comes with superb control." It is true in my opinion. Art, like many things I practice, the more discipline you have, the better you will get. If you constantly practice and treat it seriously with respect then you will achieve your goal.

Not much going on here, I've been busy moving all the video files from Payloadz to E-Junkie. Tons of work still left to do. All I want to do is paint, not moving files around and changing servers.
Here is the latest, It is still a long way to finish line.  I am hoping to finish it soon.  Step by step will come when it is done.  ;-)

How to draw Cammy Street Fighter Manga

How to draw Cammy Street Fighter Manga. Learn how to draw Manga way, Street Fighters' characters. Drawing and sketching technique for manga, can also be used in any cartoon and comics. Learn to draw with insight from Video and step by step tutorial.

It is very useful if you can look at any subject and able to break it down into simple geometry shapes. You can always practice it even when you are not drawing to keep your brain stimulated.  Very good observation exercise for artists.  It is a lot easier to draw once you observe the over all shape of the object or person you are trying to draw. I usually start of using sphere or circle as a base for character's skull, then next step would be figuring out the next geometry form to fit into the image.  Or any big geometry shape you see first when you observe the subject then go from there.

Cammy was one of the four "New Challengers" introduced in the fourth Street Fighter II revision, Super Street Fighter II. In this game, Cammy is a teen-aged agent of the fictional Delta Red task force within Britain's MI6. In the Japanese version of her ending, she is revealed to have been an agent working for M. Bison in the past, but lost her memories during a past operation. Inexplicably, the American version instead reported her as a previous lover of M. Bison's, but likewise suffering from amnesia.
A younger version would be included in the crossover game X-Men vs. Street Fighter, which features Cammy as an assassin for Bison's Shadaloo organization, with her codename "Killer Bee" (and in later games described as one of the "Shadaloo Dolls"). The ending of the game alludes to Cammy's memory loss and her eventual joining of Delta Red.

Below is a drawing diagram break down in geometry shapes of Cammy's face.  It will be really easy to get the proportion right for beginner.

Here is a final quick Manga sketch of Cammy.

Below is a Drawing Manga instruction video tutorial, How to draw Cammy from Street Fighters.

Below are step by step images of drawing Manga lesson to complement with the video tutorial, How to draw Cammy from Street Fighters.

As you can see in 1-3)  I am just trying to build up (sketch) the overall shape of the subject (Cammy).  At this point, do not worry so much about little detail, try to get the most accurate big shape of the subject you are drawing first.
4) Once you have the foundation sketch, then you can add in eyes, nose, mouth, and hair base on the construction line you already have.  There are vertical line and horizontal lines to establish the facial structure as instruct on the video tutorial.

5-6) Now we can start to see her face forming in the accurate facial structure with attitude or emotion.  At this point, try to get everything in place as much as possible.  Drawing is more about getting your lines in the right position, not about adding more lines.  Once you get your lines in the right place, you don't need much to execute a good drawing.
7-8)  If you follow the instruction correctly, now you can just go ahead and draw the final darker lines over the sketch.  You still can make correction along the way to make your drawing looks even better.  If you did not get the result.  Watch the video lesson and read the additional information here again.

How to paint Paladin in steel armor

How to paint character in steel armor.  Paladin female warrior in steel armor with bunny design. It is finally done! It takes me about 6-8 hours to actually paint total. Continuing from previous post, the idea derives from the year of the rabbit. It has been quite a while since I did a heavy knight set type of armor. I used to do it everyday at ArenaNet. :-) So I guess I miss making heavy armor design a bit. So partially I think I did it to satisfy my character with armor design craving.
In this design, I first just focus on the shape of the overall body (silhouette). Once I figured out the silhouette I am looking for, I will start to paint and render them out. It is a lot easier to get the big picture down first, then paint in little tiny detail afterward. You can have in mind what kind of detail and design you are aiming for, but just keep it at bay until you can settle with your overall look of the armor as a whole.
Most of the time when I work on the armor designs, silhouettes is probably the most important element to begin with. I will sketch tons of thumbnails of different silhouettes, then pick and choose. Because if you can variety of cool looking silhouettes, then for sure they will all look different when you get down to really draw and paint them. Anyway, that is just some tips. It will save you a lot of time in character design process. Also get you variety of different design in a quick way.

Ok, here is off the topic but my friend Carlos is fundraising for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I just donated $25 today, they have list of donors on the right column of the page. How to draw Akuma from Street fighter.

How to draw Akuma from Street fighter.  Manga tutorial, draw Akuma from Street fighter. Learn how to draw Manga way, Street Fighters' characters. Akuma (the great Demon). Drawing and sketching technique for manga, can also be used in any cartoon and comics. Learn to draw with insight from Video and step by step tutorial.

Akuma's head has a very almost rectangular rather than typical taper down egg shape. His facial structure demonstrated masculinity, agression and power. Before you start drawing, it is very useful if you can look at any subject and able to break it down into simple geometry shapes. In this case, you can see strong rectangular shapes and random flame on top as his hair. Breaking your subject down into simple shape is a very good observation exercise for artists. It can be a lot easier when you already know the geometric structure of the subject.

Akuma (in Japanese, "Devil") known in Japan as Gouki (豪鬼 Gōki lit. Great Demon?), is a video game character from the Street Fighter series of fighting games. Akuma made his debut in Super Street Fighter II Turbo as a secret character and hidden boss. In the storyline of the Street Fighter video games, he is the younger brother of Gouken, Ryu and Ken's sensei. In some games he also has an enhanced version named Shin Akuma, or Shin Gouki (真・豪鬼?, the "true Gouki") in Japanese. Akuma has maroon hair, wears prayer beads around his neck, a charcoal gray dogi and a piece of twine around his waist in lieu of an obi. The kanji 'ten' (天) - meaning "sky/heaven", (all in the spiritual sense) - can be seen on his back when it appears during certain win animations. Shin Akuma's appearance is very similar to Akuma's; for example, in the Street Fighter Alpha series, Shin Akuma had a purple gi instead of a gray one and marginally lighter tone. Akuma's introduction in Super Street Fighter II Turbo stemmed from the development team's desire to introduce a "mysterious and really powerful" character, with his status as a hidden character within the game resulting from later discussions.

Below is an easy drawing diagram break down in geometry shapes of Akuma's face. It will be really easy to get the proportion right for beginner.
Here is a final quick Manga sketch of Akuma

Below is a video Manga drawing instruction of Akuma from Street Fighter.

Below step by step images of drawing Manga lesson to complement with the video tutorial, How to draw Akuma from Street Fighters.

1-3) I am just trying to sketch out the structure of the overall shape of the Akuma. At this point, do not worry so much about little detail, try to get the most accurate big shape of the subject you are drawing first.
in 4) I already have the foundation sketch, then I can just add in eyes, nose, mouth, and hair base on the construction line you already have. There are vertical line and horizontal lines to establish the facial structure as instruct on the video tutorial.

5-6) Now we begin to see Akuma's face forming in the accurate facial structure. At this point, try to get his facial structure as accurate as it can be. Drawing correctly or accurately is better than getting more lines or add in detail to cover up the mistake or the unsure area, accuracy first then detail. Once you get your structure right, you will most likely have a great drawing without having to put in hours and hours.

Hope you enjoy the tutorial, see you on the next one.

1) I start off with simple square shape.

2) I then add a rectangle shape on top as a rough shape for a thumb

3) Add two more rectangle inside the initial square, top one serves as a rough guideline for index and middle fingers.  The bottom one serves as a guideline for ring and pinky fingers.

4) Then draw a vertical line cross both of the smaller rectangles.  As they indicate the pivot point on fingers.

5) Add shading as shown and refine the shape of the thumb.

How to draw Manga, Miku Vocaloid

How to draw Manga Miku Vocaloid.  Learn how to draw Manga, Anime, and comics.  Drawing and sketching anime technique for manga, cartoon and comics. Learn to draw with tips from a professional concept artist and illustrator.

Drawing Manga, Comics or anything could be easy if you simplify the complexity of the subject. When you see a figure in different poses, try to capture the main body or the most noticeable part first. Then simplify the shape of the main idea into a big simple geometry shape. Then move on to the next part and do the same for the rest. It is very useful if you can look at any subject and able to break it down into simple form. It can be very good observation exercise for artists. It is a lot easier to draw once you observe the over all shape of the object or person you are trying to draw. I usually start of using sphere or circle as a base for character's skull, then next whatever shapes or forms that fits into part of the image.

What is Vocaloid? Vocaloid (ボーカロイド Bōkaroido?) is a singing synthesizer application, with its signal processing part developed through a joint research project between the Pompeu Fabra University in Spain and Yamaha Corporation, who backed the development financially—and later developed the software into the commercial product "Vocaloid". The software enables users to synthesize singing by typing in lyrics and melody. It uses synthesizing technology with specially recorded vocals of voice actors or singers.

Who is Miku?  Crypton had the idea to release Miku as "an android diva in the near-future world where songs are lost." When KEI illustrated Miku he was asked to Miku as an android and her colours (based on YAMAHA synthesizer's signature blue-green color). Also Crypton gave him her detailed concepts, however, Crypton says it was not easy to explain what "Vocaloid" is like to KEI and KEI says he could not have an image of "singing computer" at first as he did not even know what "synthesizer" is, and it took more than a month. The digital design on Miku's skirt and boots are based off synthesizer program colours and the bars represent the actual bars within the program, following Crypton's idea. Miku was originally intended to have a different hairstyle, but KEI stuck to pigtails after trying them out.

Below is a construction break down sheet for easy drawing of Miku face.
Vocaloid Miku drawing tutorial

Here is a final Manga drawing of Miku
drawing Miku Vocaloid

Below is a video tutorial of How to draw Manga, Miku Vocaloid.

Also step by step tutorial images to compliment the Manga drawing video tutorial.

In 1-3) I am just drawing really light construction lines to get the overall shape of the subject (Muki). When first start drawing something, do not worry so much about adding little detail in the beginning, try to get the most accurate big shape of the subject you are drawing first.
4) Once you have construction line cover the overall shape, then you can add in eyes, nose, mouth, and hair using existing construction line you already have as base.  There are vertical line and horizontal lines to establish the facial structure as instruct on the video tutorial.

draw Miku Volcaloid step 1

5-7) Now we can start to see her face forming in the accurate facial structure of Miku.  Then, I try to get everything in place as much as possible. Drawing is more about getting your lines in the accurate position and proportion, not about adding more detail.  Good drawing always come from great foundation, accuracy and correct proportion.
If you follow the instruction correctly, now you can just go ahead and draw the final darker lines over the sketch.  If you did not get the result you want, check your placement of body part for its accuracy or proportion.
