Get Zelda or Angry birds for your lunch.

Do you ever feel like getting Zelda or Angry birds for your lunch.  Now you can with the site call http://mymealbox.com/
I stumble upon this website when I saw the post on Angry Birds Bento box.
Here, Angry Birds never looks yummier than this!

I don't think you can order this version of Angry Bird Bento box yet.  But the artist who make the Bento lunch box has a description of how he/she made them.   This fun creation was made by the guys at mymealbox, and perfectly captures a bird and a green piggy in edible form. The red bird was made from white rice and tomato sauce, with a carrot beak and red pasta feather. Green piggy was crafted from rice, edamame and pea paste, with good-enough-to-eat edamame ears, and a cucumber nose. Both of them have eyebrows and eyes made from nori and cheese slices.
They have a menu on the website for order, but then I don't think it is available in US.  Sadly, they located at Puri Indah, Kembangan – West Jakarta, but we do deliver our bento to our customers around Jakarta and vicinity (Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, Serpong).
But you should visit their website at http://mymealbox.com, they have a lot of cool inspiring Bento art and some recipe for their Bento lunch box.

How to paint folds and wrinkles on cloth

How to paint folds and wrinkles on cloth.  Fox spirit digital painting process using Photoshop. In this painting step by step tutorial, I am still experiment with high key painting, but unlike my previous two high key I've done earlier ( High key painting and High key portrait painting.)  The previous two I painted using the value scale of 70 to 100 (*100 = white, the far end right of the brightness bar on HSB in Photoshop). That's a very small range of value to work with. In this illustration, this time I expand into a bit wider range, but still remain high key value. I use value range from 50 to 100 (medium grey to white) for this illustration and spend a few days on it. I have more value range to paint and work with this time to the image turns out a little better in term of making her look three dimensional rather than flat. Anyway, I felt like painting a fox spirit so I did.

Fox spirit is an ancient Far East spirits (mostly evil), it appears in China, Korean and Japan's fairy tales. It has its own name, 狐狸精 Huli Jing in Chinese, 구미호 Kumiho in Korean, or Kisune in Japanese.
in Chinese mythology are fox spirits that are akin to European fairies. Huli jing can be either good spirits or bad spirits. In Chinese mythology, it is believed that all things are capable of acquiring human forms, magical powers, and immortality, provided that they receive sufficient energy, in such forms as human breath or essence from the moon and the sun.
The fox spirits encountered in tales and legends are usually females and appear as young, beautiful women. One of the most infamous fox spirits in Chinese mythology was Daji (妲己), who is portrayed in the Ming novel Fengshen Yanyi.
Like all other monsters, the fox spirit was thought to grow wise with age and with enough training, eventually learn to morph itself into various forms, including humans. But often times, in human form, they still cannot hide their tails.  Thus, they are often depicted as beautiful young maidens that trick unsuspecting men and later consume their hearts. In modern Mandarin profanity, the term huli jing is a derogatory expression describing a woman who seduces a married or otherwise a man who is already taken.

Fox Spirit, 狐狸精 Huli Jing
how to paint Anime fox spirit

There are also many Chinese movies base on Fox spirit's characteristic and tales. The most recent one I saw a few years ago called 畫皮 (Hua Pi) or "Painted Skin"

Though in Korean and Japan, fox spirit often refer to a nine tails fox. The nine tails often portrays in Manga or Anime as extremely powerful. I would put them into a different categories based on what I've seen. They are powerful in my opinion but the demon is still more than a few ranks below Dragon, Monkey King, and many more.

Now, um...where was I? Ah.

I took the ears out because I don't really like it when she too much like a furry rather than a fantasy or fairy tales painting.

Instant Artist statement generator

Instant Artist statement generator is probably my dream comes true, also I think a lot of you will like it. Whenever I post my art work on forum, social network or any art website, the most difficult part for me is to write something cool to describe my work. I am not very good at writing and my grammar sucks. I usually just write some short gibberish just to fill in the blank.
But fear no more! Someone has come up with Instant Artist statement generator call "Arty Bollocks Generator."

Here is the website: http://10k.aneventapart.com/Uploads/262/#
Check it out and you will instantly love it!!!

Here is what I get when I first try, pretty impressive. Well, it is better than I could come up myself within seconds.
"My work explores the relationship between postmodern discourse and skateboard ethics.
With influences as diverse as Camus and Frida Kahlo, new tensions are created from both traditional and modern layers.
Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by the theoretical limits of the human condition. What starts out as hope soon becomes debased into a tragedy of lust, leaving only a sense of chaos and the prospect of a new beginning.
As temporal phenomena become transformed through diligent and diverse practice, the viewer is left with an impression of the limits of our condition."

Let me know what you guys think. ;-)

How to paint cloth wrinkle digital painting tutorial and tips

How to paint cloth wrinkle digital painting tutorial and tips. This video demo and step by step is going to show you how to paint wrinkle on cloth. I got a lot of question via e-mail or social media pm on how to go about painting wrinkle on cloth or paint cloth in general.
This tutorial will show you how to paint wrinkle on cloth basically from conceptual art perspective. Because most of the time you might not have reference handy, this way is the easy way to paint cloth using just three value or value with hue to demonstrate how to arrange light and shadow on clothing. I will just show you guys on the sleeve part, it is a short tutorial.
**Note: This demo use the value range within the high key painting (from 50% grey to 100%white).  So you guys could go darker or to full range depending on your overall value of your piece.

As for different kind of textiles or clothes, there is not much to it except the change in lighting. Different material has different capacity to reflect light. As long as you know that, you will handle material in painting just fine. For instance silk has different value than cotton within the same lighting situation. It is more reflective and possibly has higher contrast and highlight or more variation of value range than flat looking cotton. Similar to satin, they both are highly reflective. No matter if you are advance painter or a novice, the best way to practice painting different material are to set up a still life using different material of your choice. Set them up right next to each other like metal pot, silk, cotton, apple and bananas. You will then notice that each one react differently to the same lighting. The exercise will help you understand painting a lot more in term of materials related to lighting.

Here is a final wrinkle cloth I painted on her right sleeve.

Below are generic basic video of how to paint wrinkle on clothing.

Here is a painting of a Fox Spirit I am working on. She has no sleeve on this one, so I am going to paint a sleeve onto one of her arm. It is still work in progress, I am trying to finish this piece some time this week.

Game of Thrones art work

Game of Thrones art work.  A Game of Thrones is the best show on TV in my opinion. Every Sunday night, I was always waiting for the show. And I am not a big TV show fan, but I do watch some shows like Rome, Tudors season I & II, and Deadwood.  Though I've never wait around to watch them. I will just wait to watch them whenever I want. But a Game of Thrones series are no doubt, the best series in a long time. And by far it is the best TV show of 2011. It was beyond well done and stay very very close to the book.

Trailer

Eddard Stark was shown heavily in the show's marketing, and viewers who hadn't read the books fell into the trap of believing he was the show's protagonist. He was noble, powerful, and in a world filled with people whose motivations were twisted and obscure he seemed to be a genuinely good person. In fact, this was his fatal flaw: the idea that as long as he did the right thing with the right motivations, everything would be okay. By the time he was standing in front of the people, confessing treason, it was too late for him, and his beheading was shocking. Even in the book, as I read it I thought well he is the main hero for a long while and I did not expect him to be beheaded toward the end of book one. Well, A Game of Thrones is book one of the series called "The Song of Ice and Fire." The twist of the plot is painful, but brilliant. Book two is called "A Clash of Kings" and I am half way through it.

Those who haven't read the books - you really should. Sure it does get long winded talking about all the great houses, what everyone is wearing and what they're eating, but you will not find a better political drama anywhere. Combine that with just a touch of magic and you have one of the best fantasy series ever written. It is one of the best novels I've read. And still even if I finish book two "A Clash of Kings" and go on to book three, "A Storm of Swords", I still cannot wait to watch the season 2 on HBO.

BTW, I just did search on the internet for some really really old art work that I did for "Game of Thrones" via Fantasy Fight. I think it was like five to six years ago. I only scored a few pieces. Some of my work are also in the big art book "The Art of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire." You can still get them, I have one when it was published a long time ago.

Also if you want to see a painting video I did of Eddard Stark character go to Eddard Stark Game of Thrones for digital painting tutorial.
Below are some really old art work I did for the game series via FFG.  I think I could have done a better painting job now than then.  ;-)

I forgot how many pieces I did for the game series, there are many more I think.  But these are the set I painted and all I could find on the internet so far.  If you haven't noticed, they are all girls or females.  That was very much my main mission for the game series.  To design, draw and paint pretty ladies.  Enjoy! ;-)

High key portrait painting

High key portrait painting. Here is another experiment of high key painting from last night. If you want to know what high key painting is you can check it out on my previous post, high key painting. Usually high key painting will have value range from 50 to 100 (medium grey to white). But for mine, this is the second one I painted, I am using the value range of 70 to 100. That's make my painting really pale and almost white opaque. Personally I like it, but I think 70-100 (30), is too little of value range I can really play with. It force me to use really limited resource to at my best ability.
Since I've been painting a few painting with high key rules. It can be difficult to paint high key, but it can also be really easy. The difficulty lies in selecting the right value and color for the area of the painting. The easy part is the painting process itself, once you know where the paint goes. There is not much value range to pick from so it is a lot easier to paint.  Personally having only 30 value range to play with is not an ideal.  Perhaps, the next one I should use the value range from 50-100 instead to get more of light, shadow and color.

Anyway here is another portrait painting study using high key.

If you look at it in black and white, you will realize that there is very little value (light and dark) involved.  But if I increase the saturation of the selected color, it can help compensating the dark value visually in the area most of the time.

Action and reaction time, technique over power talent

Action and reaction time, you as a human being have greater potential than you think. I just saw something interesting on Youtube. I am a huge fan, believer and student of martial art. I believe that everything take practice and lots of practice. You could go read my old blog post on 10,000 hours theory for artists, it's cool. I am not a big fan of talent or what I am saying is talent cannot exist without crafting it. So no matter how much potential you have, without constantly practicing you will not improve. No matter if you are musician, boxer, ninja, or artist. Practicing is the key to improvement and improvement will bring you enlightenment.

Anyway, in this video, it shows you that our reaction time is greater than what can be measure scientifically. Mental chronometry is the use of response time in perceptual-motor tasks to infer the content, duration, and temporal sequencing of cognitive operations. Mental chronometry is one of the core paradigms of experimental and cognitive psychology, and has found application in various disciplines including cognitive psychophysiology/cognitive neuroscience and behavioral neuroscience to elucidate mechanisms underlying cognitive processing.

I am pretty sure these two Kendokas practice days and nights for years and years. Interest thing about the show was that former studies suggested that Human
can not react no faster than 0.2 second limted bb the speed of electric pulse running through eye - frontal cortex brain - the body muscle..But, new sport analysis studis found
some athletes could react in less than 0.2 second.
Mr. Tanakanabe had much better reactive ability than Mr. Teramoto's. But,
he could not catch up Teramoto's Men already released before his. So the point is, you could say Mr. Tanakabe is physically superior or slightly a bit more talent. But Mr. Teramoto use his refine skill and experience to power over his opponent. Technique overcomes talent, is it impossible to beat the fastest swordman in Kendo. Yes, it is. Something like that.

Sadly, I cannot embed the video from youtube. But since I already wrote the blog post.
You can go watch it here: Kendo in high speed.
Let me know what you think, it is amazing.

Anyway, more drawing and interesting things are coming up soon.

Conan the Babarian 2011, yes or no?

Conan the Babarian 2011, yes or no?  Personally, I would say YES!  Why?  First, it creates jobs and tons of job for people like us, concept artists.  Any fantasy or Sci-fi movie that will be made I totally support it bot good and bad.  Movies that do not use professional artists of any kind (concept, matte painting, sculpture, and props makers) can go to hell.  I hardly ever pay to go see it in theater.  Yes, I support many of my professions who dream of beautiful things and make art for living.  Moreover, I love Conan as long as it is fun and watchable.  But since there are so many trash talking to the new movie, my expectation will be pretty low.  On the bright side, if the movie happens to be decent, I will be pretty happy enough.

Here is a Trailer for 2011 Conan the Barbarian. (Trailer 1)

Interview with Jason Mamao

The dude is nice enough and he seems to know what he got himself into. I think people should give this movie a chance. He even mention the master artist Frank Frazetta huge influence on Conan.  And yeah, that's Khal Drogo from "Game of Thrones."

I've seen so many negative comment already about this Conan will suck!  I have no idea what these people are expecting, they haven't even seen the movie yet.  How could they make a judgement when they have not seen it. Well, it doesn't look that epic to me, but it is just a trailer.  Many epic trailers fail when the actual movie comes out.  Personally I think it would be a fun flick, why not.  It is after all Conan, a muscular barbarian dude who goes around and cut people up in the name of justice.  I just hope to see a lot of beautiful half naked women running around in the background.  What else do you expect from Conan, it is just what it is.
Or maybe, they are expecting Arnold the Terminator Governer to be Conan again.  But if they want that, just go watch the older version, I watch it all the time.  Just because they make the new one, it does not mean your DVD or movie file will evaporate.  Though I found this one really funny site compare the previous Conan to the 2011 Conan.  You should go look at the images and comment, they are hilarious!  ;-)
Conan vs Conan the babarian.

Most of the time, I just wish that people would chill out over the internet.  Too many negative energy, especially when they can really be anonymous.  I hardly ever see that on Facebook because they have real identities.

How to paint Assassin Creed Ezio Auditore

How to paint Assassin Creed Ezio Auditore.  Digital painting Ezio Auditore from assassin creed revelation. Assassin Creed series from Ubisoft always have a really stunning visual since the very first one came out into the gaming world. Once again at 2011 E3, the latest trailer, Assassin Creed Revelation also blew me away just like what I would expect to see from Assassin Creed trailer.
I have a lot of request from viewers to do a speed paint of Ezio from Assassin Creed, so here it is.
First, I usually start out with constructional sketch line drawn to find his pose and structure. Most of my sketchy line are really scribble to the point that most people cannot tell what it is. After that I established the silhouette for the hero. During this process everything is still monochromatic because, to me, it is easier to try to figure out the lighting direction. At the end of working monochromatic painting, you can now tell that now it looks a lot more like figure. Once I figured out where the light source is coming from, I will paint or render basic value to overall painting. Now the figure looks a lot more fresh out. I will always try to look at the whole picture rather than focus on tiny little detail, more importantly I really try to focus on the correct lighting. Once I have the basic value in place or close, I will then start to slowly apply color and paint over the value sketch. This time I start off color a lot earlier than usual to switch it up. Most people misunderstood that once apply color over the almost finish monochrome is the end of the process. But no, I will still use the existing color/value to paint over the appropriate area to make it look more like a painting. There are a lot of back and forth process involve. To me, a painting is never finish until only the artist say it is finish.

Ezio Auditore da Firenze (born 1459) was a Florentine noble during the Italian Renaissance and, unbeknownst to most historians and philosophers, a central member of the Assassin Order. A descendant of Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad and ancestor to both Desmond Miles and Subject 16, Ezio was unaware of his Assassin heritage until the age of 17, when his father and two brothers, Federico and Petruccio, were murdered. Ezio fled his birthplace of Florence and took refuge at the Villa Auditore in the Tuscan town of Monteriggioni.
will feature all three of the series' major characters so far: Altaïr ibn La-Ahad, Ezio Auditore da Firenze and Desmond Miles. It will take Ezio to Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) in 1511 AD, consisting of four districts: Constantin, Beyazid, Imperial, and Galata; Cappadocia at the peak of the Ottoman Empire, part of which will be a completely underground city populated solely by Templars; and Masyaf, which holds the old Assassins stronghold to which Ezio travels at the beginning of the game. He discovers Altaïr has sealed within the fortress an ancient artifact that is said to be a powerful weapon which could end the Templar and Assassin war forever, and has hidden the keys in Constantinople.

Here is a final speedpainting of Ezio Auditore from Revelation.

Journey E3 game trailer super WOW!

I was watching tons of trailers from this year E3 as I usually do every year, except nowadays I don't have to be there and wait in line anymore. Thanks to the internet, I am at the comfort of my own home and I can instantly watch whatever trailer I wish in just a few finger tapping and click. No more walking around in an extremely crowded place and most importantly it save me a lot of time.
Journey is one of the most impressive game I have seen in a while, I cannot wait to get my hands on it. The graphic look very very simple, but yet it is BEAUTIFUL!!! Wow! Visually on the the best I've ever seen. The way they use just a few color and simple silhouettes and make it looks like +AAA game is genius. From the art standpoint, it is extremely creative and difficult to pull off. I love the visual cinematic scope of Journey from TGC (ThatGameCompany). They previous made award winning PlaystationNetwork, Flow and Flower.

With Journey, thatgamecompany (TGC) continues its tradition of delivering simple gameplay and accessible controls in a rich interactive environment that invites players to explore and experience emotional chords that are still uncommon in video games.

Journey Game Trailer

An exotic adventure with a more serious tone, Journey presents TGC's unique vision of an online adventure experience. Awakening in an unknown world, the player walks, glides, and flies through a vast and awe-inspiring landscape, while discovering the history of an ancient, mysterious civilization along the way.
The twist, however, is that Journey has online multiplayer. (I don't know if I like that, I worked for and play MMO before.  I am still not a really big fan, I like playing by myself when I want to play.  Hopefully they will have a single player story mode)
"We wanted to re-imagine an online experience, where the player doesn't feel that powerful, rather they feel small and feel in awe towards the world," explained Chen. "And when two players, who both feel small, meet in an online experience, it will be quite different from two players who both have a rocket launcher in their hands."
Not only does Journey have online multiplayer--I'll get back to that in a few moments--it also has a more traditional control scheme than thatgamecompany's previous works. Unlike flOw and Flower, which saw players tilting the controller to move around, Journey assigns movement to the analog stick, with players literally tilting the controller to move the camera around. Only two other buttons, jump and call, are used.

To that end, Journey is all about exploring a mysterious world covered by an ocean of sand, stone ruins, and pieces of cloth that are part of a puzzle. Wearing a scarlet robe that stands out in stark contrast to the environment, players wake up in the middle of the sand world with no idea of how they got there. Players must seek out clues to discover the history of the mysterious planet.

Interview with co-creator Jenova Chen

The game will feature multiplayer interactions, but TCG hasn't revealed exactly how players will encounter one another online.

The Journey is set to begin on the PlayStation Network sometime in 2011. I can't wait.

High key painting

How to draw Mockingbird Avenger.  High key painting. Well, this post I am painting a figure in so-called "high key."
What is high key painting? High-key painting is usually quite homogeneous and mostly free from dark shadows. So from the scale of value range if 0 being black and 100 is being white. High key painting will be a painting that displays only from 50 to 100 or mid grey to white. Some can even go from only 70 to 100, which will be really pastel or almost white opaque.
In contrast to Chiaroscuro which often have strong contrasts between light and dark, usually bold contrasts affecting a whole composition. And that what I usually do in my painting and concept art. Sometimes I even use darker scale in value range. Most of my work, and most concept artists, are basically in the mid spectrum, usually from 10-90 in value scale or a little less.
I hope my statement makes above sense. ;-)

In this post, a high key figure painting. It is just an experiment because I got a bit bored with speed painting or typical portrait or figure this morning. So I thought what could I do to make me excited to paint today? I attempted a few really quick high key paintings a few years back. See how to draw high key blue hair girl and draw high key blondie in jeans.  I actually love the look of high key painting.  So I pick one of the previous unfinished piece I did and revived it. In this arrangement, I only use really really light value to paint. I am painting using the value scale of 70 to 100 (*100 = white, the far end right of the brightness bar on HSB in Photoshop). That's a very small range of value to work with, but it would be challenging. And I end up enjoying the process a lot more I thought I would.
There are a few things I figure out along the way. I can use the richness of color to compensate for dark value without having to change the real value range (light and dark). And even though I have a small range to work with, it seems to be enough for me to paint. I think, in traditional medium, pastel (chalk, not oil pastel) and water color would be awesome with high key painting work. Anyway, I will probably do a few more of these and discover more things and learn more about it.

Here is my almost finish high key figure painting

It is not quite finish, I know.  I didn't have enough time to paint hands and the rest of the jeans.
This one use value range of 70-100 (*100 = white, the far end right of the brightness bar on HSB in Photoshop)

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider Reboot 2011

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider Reboot 2011. The new Tomb Raider game is going to take the series in drastic new directions. The game will be an open-world, sandbox adventure as well as a survival horror. A few would have associated Lara Croft with the survival horror genre. With the new game, one of the most recognizable ladies in gaming goes through another reboot.

From what I've seen, the set and feel of the new reboot of Lara Croft reminds me a lot of the movie "Descent" and the game "Resident Evil" series combine. The younger Lara we meet at the start of Tomb Raider isn't exactly the same woman we've become acquainted to through previous titles. Square Enix has recently announced plans to publish a new Tomb Raider prequel, which will tell the origin story of one of gaming’s most famous heroines, Lara Croft. "Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider, we are exploring things that have never been done before in this game," says Darrell Gallagher of development studio Crystal Dynamics This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other." The gameplay reflects her evolution as well, unlocking more tools and skills as the story progresses.

The action begins in a mysterious cave, in which Lara is imprisoned – hung from its roof by her feet, to be precise. Her first mission is to get free, which she achieves by swinging, in order to come into contact with a convenient flaming torch (interaction between the physics engine and virtual fire is clearly a key mechanism, at least in the game's early stages) that burns off her bindings.

Warner Bros. has also confirmed plans to relaunch—and completely overhaul—the hot-pants-wearing, artifact-collecting Lara Croft: Tomb Raider franchise, with the first major casualty being Jolie. The reboot film will completely reboot the video-game-based character, including changing her origin story. And, most notably, a new leading lady. Graham King's GK Films has acquired the franchise's film rights, with plans to release an origin-story in 2013.

How to sketch portraits

How to sketch portraits.  In this post, I did a portrait drawing with step by step tutorial, quick sketch.  It's been a while since I sketch any portrait study so I thought I will sketch a really quick one this morning.  I was going to do a video tutorial of it, but there are so many of them already on the blog and the premium tutorials.  So I decided not to record a tutorial.  It is a lot easier drawing or painting without a screen capture and a timer to distract me.

Anyway, there are many similar portrait tutorials on the blog and the way to construct the face I use are that much different.  Some people ask me, how to draw a different looking faces?  I would suggest that the way faces can look different it is because of the shape of eyes, nose, eyebrows, lips and shape of face itself.  Other than the different shapes or looks of the elements, there are also placement factor.  You can use the same looking face, but if you relocate eyes, nose, or lips in just slightly different location.  You will have a new different looking face.  Here are a few portrait drawing tutorials some with Video drawing tutorials with longer step by step images tutorial; go to How to draw human head face face (3/4 view), How to draw lesson girl face (front view), realistic face tutorial front view, and how to draw realistic comics girl.

Also I need to draw and paint more monsters and Mech as some of the viewer suggested that I have not done any Mech or Mecha drawing in a long while.  So hopefully I will have some more time to do quick sketch daily.  There are so many things to be done and I wish I could just draw and painting without having to do the website and record tutorials at all.  I should have some robots to take care of the secondary elements I have to deal with.  Anyway, below is a short tutorial for quick portrait sketch.    Also another one with the same angel but different portrait study.
